Not having to call your web designer every time you want to alter something.

Keep ahead of market trends by shifting the focus of your sales pitch.

Alter your SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) keywords and phrases whenever necessary.

Make changes to your site from anywhere in the word.

Upload new products or services quickly and easily.

Announce special offers

Integrate a blog which is a hugely important marketing tool

No more update fees!

I can seamlessly integrate exisiting websites and designs into a powerful CMS but also to create a bespoke design for you. Feel free to get in touch and I’ll take you on a free demo.

SEO means Search Engine Optimisation (Or Search Engine Optimization depending on which part of the world you’ve landed here from) and essentially it means configuring your website through various arcane means (which we are really good at) to appear as high as possible in the major search engines’ results.

Just tell me the basics.
It’s very important to initially look at the search terms a potential customer is going to use to find you. Let’s say you have a Decking supply business. There’s no point being ranked high on Google for “Home and Garden Exhibition” if you happen to mention that you are attending one and this gets picked up. You need to be looking at “Decking” and then your catchment area. Let’s say “Decking Dublin” if you happen to live in this part of the world.

You can build from this by looking at your unique selling point. For instance, are your products exclusive? Are they affordable? Do they have green credentials? If so, your search engine optimisation campaign should perhaps start looking at terms like “Affordable Decking”, “Plastic Lumber Decking” etc.

Your SEO specialists will have you seeing noticeably results within a few weeks. A good SEO expert will also ensure that an analytics programme such as Google Analytics has been installed so you can see for yourself where your new customers are coming from, what pages they are entering at and what pages they are exiting at. You’ll also be able to see the search terms they are using and this will put you in a powerful position to start tweaking these as you see which terms are generating the most business and which search terms are under performing.

If you have an existing site with a content management system (CMS) you are in a good position to build from the work your SEO specialist has initially put in place. If you have a site without a CMS, have a look at having it integrated into one. This will give you the power to make changes to your own site, when and wherever you like. Websites can start to drop down the rankings when the search engines see little change. If your site remains static it also gives your competitors a chance to adjust their sites SEO on a constant basis to jump ahead of you.

Drop me a line if you would like to talk further about SEO or any other aspect of website design!

In April 2008, Rebecca Haden lost her job when the small store she managed went out of business. A year later, she’s working as many as 40 hours a week and earning much more than she did before — even though she still doesn’t have a job. Her formula? Freelancing her Web skills.

Ms. Haden, of Fayetteville, Ark., is among a growing number of professionals who are making ends meet by working on a project-by-project contract basis. Even as permanent- and temp-job opportunities are shrinking, the amount of contract work to be found on freelance-jobs sites is expanding. What’s more, it’s moving beyond computer-programming and graphic-design gigs for small employers to include listings from larger companies and assignments in fields such as accounting, law, engineering and sales.

Between January and March, employers posted 70,500 of these work-for-hire positions onElance.com and 43,000 on Odesk.com, which represents increases of 35% and 105%, respectively, from the same period in 2008. Sologig.com, which lists remote and on-site freelance jobs, says its average monthly postings have more than doubled to around 13,500 per month in the past year. In March, there were 750 jobs listed on VirtualAssistants.com, versus 400 in March 2008.

At the same time, the number of U.S. workers employed by temporary-help-services firms in March fell 27% to 1.8 million from the same month in 2008, according to the Labor Department.

As the recession takes hold, more employers are using freelance workers to avoid the expenses associated with hiring permanent staff, says Fabio Rosati, chief executive officer of Mountain View, Calif.-based Elance. “The power of online work is that it’s immediate, cost-effective and flexible,” he says.

Indeed, freelance workers are often cheaper and more flexible than temp workers, whose jobs, though short-term, tend to be full-time, subject to temp-agency fees, and bound by agency restrictions, such as limits on the permanent hiring of temps.

Mr-SEO.com, an online marketing firm with eight employees, began using freelance help a year ago to handle tasks in Web-site development, administrative services and copywriting. The five-year-old Seattle-based company hired 17 freelancers through Odesk.com for projects that lasted as little as a few days or as long as eight months and counting. “It gives us the flexibility to expand our work force depending on client demand,” says Greg Gaskill, the company’s president.

Like many workers who turn to freelance positions, Ms. Haden, a 51-year-old mother of four, didn’t plan to take on piecemeal work after her layoff. At first, she approached a local Internet company about a permanent job doing Web optimization — a technique for boosting a site’s search-engine rankings. It was a skill she had learned while overseeing her former employer’s online store and blog. The firm wasn’t hiring, but it offered her a short freelance assignment. She accepted.

Ms. Haden, who holds a master’s degree in linguistics, wrote about the experience for a popular blog on Web optimization. “People started approaching me with work pretty soon after that,” she says.

‘I Just Do the Fun Stuff’

One gig she landed introduced her to Odesk, which, like some other contract-job sites, can monitor freelancers’ work. Since then, Ms. Haden says she’s landed a steady supply of Web-optimization assignments through Odesk, as well as through her personal Web site and blog. Most months, she earns more than double her previous income. Ms. Haden says the work has been fulfilling, and she has put her permanent-job search on hold indefinitely. “I get to pick and choose what I do now,” she says. “And I just do the fun stuff.”

Family Money

Many other laid-off professionals appear to be taking up freelancing, either as a new career or as a way to weather the downturn. Freelance-job sites say membership among individuals, which is free in many cases, has risen sharply. For example, Guru.com has nearly 878,000 freelance members today, up from around 760,000 a year ago.

Freelance-job sites also say they’re seeing more midsize and large employers posting assignments, and the jobs have expanded into more business functions, such as finance, manufacturing and law. For example, roughly 1,700 new jobs were added to the sales and marketing category on Elance in March, a 50% increase from a year ago. That’s led to new types of contract workers, too.

Last month, Lynn Welch became one of those new freelancers when she began a 96-hour home-based consulting stint for Axsys Technologies Inc., a large, publicly traded manufacturer of infrared technologies based in Rocky Hill, Conn. She was laid off in March from a senior marketing position at a midsize technology firm and says her Axsys contract is one of four freelance assignments she’s landed either through networking or Guru. She’s so far earned roughly $10,000 from freelance gigs in online marketing.

Pitfalls of Contract Work

Despite her successes, Ms. Welch, who is 40 and lives in a Washington, D.C., suburb, says she still deals with some of the pitfalls that come with contract work. For example, she says she once spent several hours researching and explaining how she’d handle a potential project, but didn’t get the gig. “Some [employers] want to pick your brain and have no intention of paying you,” she says. Now Ms. Welch is more cautious about sharing information with employers before a contract is signed. “If they’re asking for a lot of details, that’s a warning sign,” she says.

Sites like Odesk, Guru and Elance guarantee payment after jobs are completed in return for commissions of about 6% to 10% of freelancers’ fees. But many other sites hold individuals fully responsible for billing clients and collecting payments.

There are other downsides to freelancing, from the lack of health coverage and paid time off to the need to make your own retirement contributions. Striking out on your own also requires regularly searching for and vetting potential new assignments, while ensuring that you complete on time the ones you’ve already secured. Furthermore, you may need to invest in equipment such as computer software and a business phone line.

Carving Out a Niche

Should you decide to take up contract work, there are ways to help ensure the process goes smoothly. First, make sure to be very specific about your skills and expertise when you fill out a profile on a freelance job site, says Kate Lister, author of “Undress for Success: The Naked Truth About Making Money at Home.” Doing so will help you stand out from the competition. “You want to carve out a niche,” she says.

To figure out how much to charge for your work, research the rates that experienced freelancers demand for similar services, suggests Ms. Lister. The information can usually be found in members’ profiles on freelance job sites. “Look at their portfolios and ask yourself, could I produce that level of work? Could I do much better than that?” she says. After settling on a figure, Ms. Lister suggests starting out at a slightly lower rate to build a track record.

Another option is to offer to work for just a few hours at first to prove yourself, suggests Gower Idrees, founder of RareBrain Capital LP, a consulting firm specializing in high-growth businesses in The Woodlands, Texas. Since early 2007, Mr. Idrees has hired about 1,500 freelancers from Guru — including former big-company executives, many as consultants. “I’ve used them in every way possible,” he says.

Mr. Idrees recommends discussing potential projects with hiring managers over the phone whenever possible, rather than using email, in order to build trust and negotiate a fair pay rate. That way, a potential freelancer “can educate [the company] on what the challenges really are,” he explains. Sometimes, he says, employers aren’t aware just how many hours a project will require.

The new technology will allow Google’s search engine to identify associations and concepts related to a query, improving the list of related search terms Google displays along with its results, the company announced in an official blog on Tuesday.

“For example, if you search for ‘principles of physics’, our algorithms understand that ‘angular momentum,’ ‘special relativity,’ ‘big bang’ and ‘quantum mechanic’ are related terms that could help you find what you need,” wrote Ori Allon, technical lead of Google’s Search Quality team, and Ken Wilder, team engineer at the company’s Snippets project.

Social-networking Web sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, now attract more than 100 million visitors a month. As the popularity of Web 2.0 has grown, companies have noted the intense consumer engagement and creativity surrounding these technologies. Many organizations, keen to harness Web 2.0 internally, are experimenting with the tools or deploying them on a trial basis.

Over the past two years, McKinsey has studied more than 50 early adopters to garner insights into successful efforts to use Web 2.0 as a way of unlocking participation. We have surveyed, independently, a range of executives on Web 2.0 adoption. Our work suggests the challenges that lie ahead. To date, as many survey respondents are dissatisfied with their use of Web 2.0 technologies as are satisfied. Many of the dissenters cite impediments such as organizational structure, the inability of managers to understand the new levers of change, and a lack of understanding about how value is created using Web 2.0 tools. We have found that, unless a number of success factors are present, Web 2.0 efforts often fail to launch or to reach expected heights of usage. Executives who are suspicious or uncomfortable with perceived changes or risks often call off these efforts. Others fail because managers simply don’t know how to encourage the type of participation that will produce meaningful results.

Some historical perspective is useful. Web 2.0, the latest wave in corporate technology adoptions, could have a more far-reaching organizational impact than technologies adopted in the 1990s—such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), and supply chain management (Exhibit 1). The latest Web tools have a strong bottom-up element and engage a broad base of workers. They also demand a mind-set different from that of earlier IT programs, which were instituted primarily by edicts from senior managers.

The Semantic Web is an evolving extension of the World Wide Web in which the semantics of information and services on the web is defined, making it possible for the web to understand and satisfy the requests of people and machines to use the web content. It derives from World Wide Web Consortium director Sir Tim Berners-Lee’s vision of the Web as a universal medium for data, information, and knowledge exchange.

At its core, the semantic web comprises a set of design principles, collaborative working groups, and a variety of enabling technologies. Some elements of the semantic web are expressed as prospective future possibilities that are yet to be implemented or realized. Other elements of the semantic web are expressed in formal specifications. Some of these include Resource Description Framework (RDF), a variety of data interchange formats (e.g. RDF/XML, N3, Turtle, N-Triples), and notations such as RDF Schema (RDFS) and the Web Ontology Language (OWL), all of which are intended to provide a formal description of concepts, terms, and relationships within a given knowledge domain.

We Web designers are a fickle lot. We love to experiment with things. We love to observe how people interact with our work.
Now let’s go into detail and take a closer look at each of the trends presented above.

1. Letterpress

One of the most unexpected trends we’ve observed over the last months was the emergence of letterpress (actually pressed letters) in Web design. Probably the most important reason for this trend is the simple fact that this technique has been rarely used until now. Letterpress is used in various styles and on various websites and for various topics; in particular, it is often used in product designs and on websites for online services.

2. Rich User Interfaces

Happily, user interfaces in modern websites and Web applications are becoming more beautiful and more usable. Over the last year, the user experience for these applications has dramatically improved, resulting in rich and responsive user interface that have tremendous similarities with classic desktop applications. AJAX and Flash are widely used to offer users the dynamic interaction that they have come to expect from advanced, sophisticated, professional solutions.

In particular, we’ve seen much more white space over the last year, much more padding and much more space for various design elements. We also observed that many modern user interfaces display intuitive visual clues to communicate the status of a user’s interaction with the system. For instance, upon being clicked, event buttons often change their appearance from a “normal” to a “pressed” look (as on Newspond.com and Quicksnapper.com), confirming and providing immediate feedback on the user’s interaction with the system. Aside from this, more and more services are now able to be personalized by the user: for us, it’s a clear sign that adaptive user interfaces are coming in 2009.

Both examples are evidence that designers of Web applications are paying significantly more attention to the way in which functionality is presented and are trying to improve the user experience with more interactive and responsive solutions.

3. PNG transparency

PNG transparency, although unsupported by Internet Explorer 6, seems to have gained popularity on the scene over the last year. Apparently, designers are trying to better integrate background images into the actual content and are aiming for a style that is often seen in printed media, magazines for instance. In most cases, semi-transparent backgrounds stand out in the overall background of a page and are intended to highlight an important design element, such as a headline or announcement. Sometimes PNG transparency is used for the background of modal boxes as well.

Last year, we described a variety of ways in which can get creative with transparency in Web design, and many designers seemed to experiment with these techniques in their work. Interestingly enough, transparency is often used either in the header or footer of designs, but some designs go beyond that.

4. HUGE Typography

We presented some outstanding examples of BIG typography in previous posts. In 2009, big typography should remain popular. In particular, design agencies, portfolios, product websites and online services will use big typography to communicate the most important messages of their websites.

The font size of these design elements often goes beyond 36 pixels, and in many cases quite expensive typefaces are used to reach an audience. Overall, designers are paying closer attention to typographic details such as leading, line height and choice of font. The consequence: websites are more beautiful and more consistent and look solid and trustworthy.

5. Font Replacement

As designers pay more attention to typography, they also pay more attention to the fonts that are used for the copy in the body of websites. Although classics such as Helvetica, Arial, Georgia and Verdana undoubtedly dominate, we observed a slight trend towards font replacement (for instance, with sIFR).

What is interesting is that these fonts are often seamlessly integrated in the design of websites; they are almost never used for their own sake or simply to “upgrade” the typography of a website. Designers are trying to blend beautiful typography and arresting visual design to improve the appearance of websites and improve the user experience.

6. Modal Boxes (Lightboxes)

Modal boxes (dialog windows) are, essentially, the second generation of pop-ups. They serve as a user-friendly alternative to classic JavaScript windows and support users by focusing their attention on the most important area of the website. Modal windows are always triggered by a user action (e.g. signing up or logging in) and appear on top of the main content, like a window in a regular desktop application. Modal windows are often presented in a very subtle way: they are often semi-transparent and have a “Close” button.

7. Media Blocks

With more broadband Internet access, users can now afford to browse more than they did a couple of years ago, and designers can use this opportunity to present content in a more attractive and memorable way. Hence, it’s no wonder that many product websites use media blocks (for videos and screencasts) for this very purpose. The main advantage of such elements is that they can communicate content quickly and effectively and make it easier for users to consume information.

Users just lean back and enjoy the show; they get everything explained to them step by step, without having to click, search for descriptions or learn the navigation. The movies are usually pretty short and get directly to the point; they are mostly formal but can be entertaining, too.

But please make sure that videos are an alternative presentation of (and not the main or only!) content on your website. Not every user has broadband access to the Web, not every user is willing to watch a video (e.g. because he or she may have a radio or music playing in the background), and not every user has Flash and JavaScript installed on his or her machine.
